How to Prep Your Boat for Off-Season Storage in Northeast Florida

Jacksonville sits at the confluence of the St. Johns River, the Intracoastal Waterway, and the Atlantic Ocean — which means boating isn’t just a hobby here, it’s practically a way of life. But even in Florida, there comes a time when the boat needs to come out of the water and go into storage, whether that’s between seasons, during hurricane season, or simply while life gets busy.

The difference between a boat that comes out of storage ready to run and one that comes out with a long list of problems almost always comes down to how well it was prepped going in. Here’s the right way to do it in Northeast Florida.

Flush and Fog the Engine First

This is the single most important step for any inboard or outboard engine going into storage. Salt, sand, and sediment accumulate in your cooling passages every time you take the boat out, and if left sitting, they corrode the system from the inside.

Flush the engine thoroughly with fresh water using a flush muff or by running it on a hose connection until the water running out is clean. Once flushed, fog the cylinders with marine fogging oil to coat internal surfaces and prevent corrosion during storage. Change the engine oil and filter before storage too — used oil contains combustion acids that will damage engine components if left sitting.

Clean the Hull and Apply Protection

A dirty hull going into storage is an invitation for oxidation, staining, and gel coat degradation. Wash the hull thoroughly, then apply a quality marine wax to the gel coat to protect it from UV exposure. In Jacksonville’s sun, an unwaxed hull can oxidise significantly even during a few months of storage.

Inspect the hull for any stress cracks or chips and address them before storage. Small cracks that get ignored tend to become expensive repairs.

Drain Everything

Water left anywhere in a stored boat causes problems. Drain the bilge completely, remove any water from livewells, baitwells, and the icebox, and leave all drain plugs out during storage so any moisture that gets in can escape rather than pool.

Remove the drain plug from the transom and store it separately where you’ll remember it — finding it missing at the boat ramp is a mistake you only make once.

Disconnect and Protect the Battery

Just like with RV storage, Florida heat is hard on marine batteries. Disconnect the battery and store it in a cool, dry place connected to a smart trickle charger. If you leave a battery connected and unattended for months in Jacksonville summer conditions, you’ll likely come back to find it won’t take a charge.

Clean the battery terminals before disconnecting to prevent corrosion from sitting.

Protect the Interior

Moisture and heat are the enemies of a stored boat interior. Remove all cushions, life jackets, ropes, and electronics and store them indoors if possible. Leave seat covers in place to protect upholstery from UV damage.

Place moisture absorbers inside the cabin to combat Jacksonville’s humidity. Crack hatches and vents slightly if your cover allows adequate airflow — a sealed boat interior in Florida summer heat builds up serious moisture.

Cover It Properly

A quality cover is essential for outdoor boat storage in Northeast Florida. UV rays will fade upholstery, crack vinyl, and degrade plastic components significantly over even a short storage period without protection. A well-fitting, breathable cover protects against sun, rain, birds, and debris while allowing enough airflow to prevent moisture buildup underneath.

If your boat is stored outdoors, consider a full mooring cover or shrink wrap for extended periods.

Choose a Facility That Understands Florida Conditions

Boat storage in Jacksonville isn’t one-size-fits-all. You want a facility with drive-up access that can accommodate your trailer, adequate security, and ideally covered spaces that protect your vessel from Florida’s intense UV environment.

At Glacier Storage in Jacksonville, our boat storage options are designed with local conditions in mind. Whether you need a short-term space between trips or long-term seasonal storage, we have solutions built around what Northeast Florida boat owners actually need.
